The Call Back

Sunday, August 6, 2006

Yesterday morning I arose at 8. A little early for a Saturday but I wanted to be awake and warmed up for the call back audition at 10. I felt prepared for the most part. I was also a little nervous.

I told Donna I would try to be back in time to leave with her to the family reunion we had planned for noon. I wasn't sure how long the audition would take though.

I got to the theater early, around 9:20, so I could sit in the parking lot and rehearse with the backup CD I had made the night before from the vocal sides the theater had provided. My voice was cold and hoarse. A little early for some of these notes.

The audition went well, overall, but took about two and half hours. There were about 25 people there and the auditioners wanted to see and hear everybody read and sing for nearly every part. I was pretty rusty for the musical numbers, but I felt I had made up for my bad rythm with personality. Acting! (Genius!).

When I got back to the car and looked at my phone, there were nine missed calls from home and the wife's cell phone. I immediately called her.

"Sorry, I took so long, we just got done here and I'm headed to the reunion now."

"I expected a call from you. You're later than you said you'd be."

"I'm calling now, I didn't have a chance earlier, they kept us pretty busy. Plus I left my phone in the car so I wouldn't disturb the auditions."

"Well, it broke my heart that you didn't call."

It went on like this for a few minutes. I told her again that I called as soon as I could and that I was sorry. I also told her I was disappointed that she hadn't even bothered to ask how my audition had gone.

Nothing. Just more of the same about how I need to call if I'm going to be late, and how much I have hurt her in the past, and on and on.

She finally said, "So, how did the audition go?"

"What the fuck do you care?", I said. I hung up and drove home. This, I'm afriad, is typical. I'm forced to wonder what kind of wife she wants to be. I wonder, as I do everyday, why she is still with me.

  • I've said it before. I'll say it again. I wish this was my dog.

Or is it wish it were? I always get mixed up on the subjunctive case.
