Speaking As A Man

Friday, October 20, 2006

"We will never get a man into space. This earth is man's sphere and it was never intended that he should get away from it... The moon is a superior planet to the earth and it was never intended that man should go there. You can write it down in your books that this will never happen." - May 14,1961

— Joseph Fielding Smith, Jr

I've heard, as an excuse for President Smith's stupidity on this point, that he was merely 'speaking as a man' and that this opinion in no way should be taken as a reflection of official doctrine. Too bad he was actually standing at a pulpit when he said it, eh?

It's very convenient the way

It's very convenient the way the whole "Doctrine if I agree with it, counsel if I don't" mentality works.

PS- again, your image verifcation can bite me. Sorry for taking up all the page views.

Doctrine...

Almost as if it is the philosophy of men... mingled with scripture.

The Stain Dirty Tooth

There is no standard of truth in the mormon religion. All scripture is overridden by the words of the leaders which, as you have shown, are never guaranteed to be true guidance from a divine, perfect creator of the universe. The simple explanation for this is that evrything said by any man is said as a man (women included). Either everything serves as evidence of God or nothing does, so there is no sorting it out. It's like trying to point up in the sky in the direction of Tatooine (see Star Wars). It's made up. It isn't anywhere. Well, at least you could go to Tunisia and see what is supposed to be a far off galaxy. No such luck for God and Heaven.
p.s. your validation asked me to coffee and wants my phone #. It asks 3 times. Then my cock crew.

But what does LDS Scripture say on space travel?

"It makes no difference what is written or what anyone has said, if what has been said is in conflict with what the Lord has revealed, we can set it aside. My words, and the teachings of any other member of the Church, high or low, if they do not square with the revelations, we need not accept them. Let us have this matter clear. We have accepted the four standard works as the measuring yardsticks, or balances, by which we measure every man's doctrine. You cannot accept the books written by the authorities of the Church as standards in doctrine, only in so far as they accord with the revealed word in the standard works." ~Joseph Fielding Smith (Doctrines of Salvation 3:203)

  • I've said it before. I'll say it again. I wish this was my dog.

Or is it wish it were? I always get mixed up on the subjunctive case.
