Yes, Megan, There Is A Santa Claus And He Is Me

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

This Christmas brought an interesting first for the Dunn household. Our oldest, Megan, having been recently over-educated about all things adult, is now old enough that we felt it was time we had the talk about Santa.

"Tell us, Megan, what do you know about Santa Claus?"

"I know that you and mom are Santa."

"How'd you find out?"

"I found your list last year in mom's purse."

"That'll do it."

She had a devious twinkle in her eye Christmas morning as we handed out gifts from Santa to the younger girls. She positively glowed wearing the mantle of maturity and belonging. We had let her into our world and she clearly felt a part of what is great about deceiving small children.

I immediately recognized the same look in Donna's eye when we opened the box to the family from Santa with a tag clearly written in my mother's handwriting. The Xbox 360 was an unexpected gift to the family thanks to her recent financial windfall courtesy of Fen-phen and a leaky heart valve. My brother's so-fabulous-it-makes-you-want-to-rim-Bill-Gates Microsoft employee discount may have come into play too.

It just goes to show, no matter how old you or your kids get, there are always opportunities to keep Santa alive in even the blackest hearts of the most cynical of un-believers.

If only the cure for a sore thumb from twelve hours of LEGO Star Wars II were as simple.

  • I've said it before. I'll say it again. I wish this was my dog.

Or is it wish it were? I always get mixed up on the subjunctive case.
