Ever wonder why it only takes 30 minutes to drive to BYU but it takes 45 to get back? It's because Provo sucks. If you absolutely have to visit our neighbors to the south, be sure to let them know how you feel about it.

Think About Direction, Wonder Why

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

As I closed the bathroom door and turned out the last light in the house, I couldn't help but remind myself that I don't believe in the supernatural.

"The girl said you have to close your eyes, say 'Bloody Mary' nine times then turn around three times. Then you look in the mirror and you see Bloody Mary's face."

The kids at the bus stop had convinced Beth that this sort of thing was totally true and that she could do it and see for herself. We had spent the entire evening convincing her that it was bullshit. And now, here we were, Mom, Dad, and all four kids crammed into the bathroom making ourselves dizzy in the dark.

My eyes were pressed shut. Stupid. No one could have seen if I had them open but I wanted to everything by the book. It was the only way to prove to Beth that there was nothing to the hoax.

"Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! Bloody Mary! One... Two... Three"

We all turned and looked in the mirror.

"What do you see, sweetie?"

"Nothing..."

Then something unexpected happened. Her eyes lit up.

"Let's do it again!"

So happy was she that she was able to put her superstitions to rest by simply testing them. Maybe next, I should tell her to go pray so she can learn there's no such thing as imaginary friends.

why

tempt whatever is out there? i would have been so scared! i remember going to jr. high school dances and going into the girls bathroom where we would turn out all the lights and call out to Bloody Mary. I looked only once and didn't see anything THAT time. but even now i can't pass a mirror when it's dark without thinking about BM and i try not to look too long just in case.

BOOOO

I am so glad you posted that, I totoally forgot about doing that. We loved to scare each other...try to talk to Elvis..and stuff too. One time we were in Teresa's bedroom and we got out the Ouija board and Elvis came and talked to us..he was THERE in her closet and then when we looked and he was in the backyard next to the garage..and then that one time we levitated Josie...2 fingers each..
Great memories. I wish I could remember what Elvis said.

Is this "Bloody Mary" thing

Is this "Bloody Mary" thing you speak of a nuance of Salt Lake City?! I lived there when I was in 2nd grade & that story was going around...no one had ever heard of it any place else I lived. I'm with you--but when you're a kid, it's creepy!

I had an imaginary friend

I had an imaginary friend (he was a humanoid lizard named Wilfred who played basketball with me). They are completely harmless. Kids aren't dumb enough to actually believe they are real, they are just making believe.

Imaginary Friends

The kind of friends you pray too, some kids think are real. But they aren't.

  • I've said it before. I'll say it again. I wish this was my dog.

Or is it wish it were? I always get mixed up on the subjunctive case.
