Internet? Will you be my new bestest friend?

After Friday's post, I expected a whole duffel bag of venomous email and comments telling me that Mormon Jesus was saving a special place in the Telestial Kingdom next to Hitler. But you know what? I didn't get a single one of those.

Though I did get this little totally unrelated gem.

Perhaps you would like to do a bit of research before showing your true nature. Yes Joseph Smith married young teenage girls. But so was every other man in the old west. In some states the current minimum age for marriage is 14. In New Hampshire a 13 year old girl can marry a 17 year old man. Currently in Yemen there is an 8 year old girl suing for divorce. In the old west life expectancy was shorter so people married younger. It was not uncommon for a man of 22 to marry a girl of 12. By today’s standard that is, of course, statutory Rape but this happened more than 150 years ago. In some countries it is still happening. The Prophet Mohamed’s second wife, Aisha, was 6 (or 7) years old when she was married, and the marriage was consummated when she was nine years old.

Before you judge someone, like Joseph Smith, that was born over 200 years ago by today’s standard be careful, Do you think some of your ancestors could stand the scrutiny of today’s standards?

I'm not going to argue with someone who thinks two wrongs makes a universal truth.

But as a shining beacon of internet awesomeness, you flooded me with well-wishes and kindness. You put your arms around my family and told us that we were good people who had done our best and then, finally made a tough decision. One that it turns out, many of you have had to make too.

Just knowing that you understand makes it instantly about ninety percent better.

Internet. Thanks.

Brave

When I first read your blog I have to say, I was disgusted. But then I took a look in the mirror and realized my family had to do the same thing with a dog. We'd had the dog for about 7 years and over time she went mad... She tried to bite my little sister (who was, maybe 8 at the time) and then my mother. It was almost as if she had split personalities...

It is such a hard choice to make. Luckily I was a child and my parents had to make the final choice. My father still thinks of her often and says what a good dog she was. I get all teary thinking about it.

You are very brave and honest for sharing this with the internet. I am glad you didn't get nasty emails about your dog.

p.s. I'm with you on that by the way... just because it was a long time ago doesn't make child rape and pedophilia ok. Progress is a good thing. :)

Cultural Phenom

I agree with Ana about Smith (and the apparent thousands of pedophiles who existed a century or two back). I've asked people sampler questions about Founding Fathers owning slaves and old church officials saying insightful things like 'We'll never put a man on the moon' and they shrug it off as the unchangeable and unimportant past. It's almost as if they only wish to see the happy pioneer train rolling into the Utah valley with worn shoes and dancing children...

Matter of Fact

Well I guess we should clear up a few things since we are getting all statistical and shit. According to the US Census Bureau the average age for women to get married in 1890 was the tender young age of 22. In 2003 it was 25.3. So I am sorry but it wasn't the norm for people to get married at age 12 even though it was legal during the "old west". You can find the source here: http://www.census.gov/population/socdemo/hh-fam/tabMS-2.pdf

Feed the world with pez:

Feed the world with pez: Aren't facts amazing? Too bad the person making such silly claims probably isn't allowed to visit census.gov. It would have to be an "approved" LDS site. Given that it's statistics don't match the propaganda being spouted by the LDS leaders, www.census.gov is obviously an anti-mormon website. BEWARE of www.census.gov

LOL

  • I've said it before. I'll say it again. I wish this was my dog.

Or is it wish it were? I always get mixed up on the subjunctive case.
