On the next day, Lucius witnesses the great procession and approaches the chief priest of Isis, Mithras. Mithras offers his garland of roses to Lucius, and Lucius eats the roses. As he transforms from an ass to a man, the crowd of onlookers is amazed and praise Isis for this marvel.
Mithras encourages Lucius to join in the mysteries of Isis, and they proceed with the procession to the harbor. After the ritual, Lucius is reunited with his family and friends from Corinth. He begs Mithras to initiate him into the mysteries, however the priest tells Lucius that the rite of initiation is only given at the behest of Isis by the priest chosen by Isis.
Soon afterwards, Isis appears to Lucius in a dream and determines that the time of his initiation has come and that Mithras himself will lead the ritual. She also gives Lucius the exact instructions on what he must do for the initiation. After he is initiated, Lucius devotes himself fully to Isis. Shortly afterwards, he travels from Corinth to Rome. After a year in Rome, Isis again appears to Lucius in his dreams and tells him that his initiation is not complete and he must now be initiated into the rites of Osiris.
He then approaches the chief priest of Osiris, Asinius Marcellus, and asks for initiation. However, Lucius does not have the means of paying for the ceremonies, so the initiation is delayed. Once Lucius does save the necessary sum, he is initiated into the mysteries of Osiris. Shortly thereafter, the gods appear to him yet again and say he must undergo a third initiation. Finally, Lucius undergoes another initiation to Isis.
In final reverence to the gods, he proudly shaves his head and devotes the rest of his life to the rites of Isis and Osiris.
