Model plastic show-Classic Plastic Model Club

The Classic Plastic Model Club was organized in with the car modeling enthusiast in mind. The club's goal is to draw model builders together as a group and share ideas for having fun with the model car hobby. This is accomplished by discussing techniques and how-to's, showing our latest in-progress or completed projects, travelling together to model car shows, and encouraging members to shop at local hobby stores. All these topics, and others, are covered in our newsletter. In addition to the annual Model Car Exhibition that our club hosts in the Fall, we also attend many other shows on a regional and national scale.

By Nakamura Takahito of Response emerging media. At the beginning, Shizuoka model teaching cooperative representative, Mr. Shunsaku Tamiya, president of Tamiya model, talked about the current state of the model industry.

To my surprise, as far as the plastic model is concerned, Shizuoka Hobby Show is now the most fulfilling show in the world. On the contrary, Shizuoka Hobby Show says that due to the collection of buyers from Southeast Asia, which has shown remarkable growth recently, Twin Messe, which has been held for many years now, is in a state of capacity shortage. The Asian market including China and Japan seems to be booming now. And it seems that the hobby show is being held in Shanghai and Beijing etc.

Also, looking at miniature cars, a number of brands, mainly in China, are entering the Japanese market. However, even if it is a plastic model or a miniature car, there is no doubt that it has come to a corner. Shamanism in the plastic model industry. As a big news in the model industry, a company named Hobico, a big North American Distributor, applied for the application of the Corporate Rehabilitation Act in January and was effectively sold.

Along with this, in Japan manufacturer Hasegawa Co. The current level says that all dies and molds are being transferred to the German level. It is a situation where you can not see the future how the American level will go. Incidentally, under the umbrella level, the brand called Monogram which blew the world in Japan in the s was also included.

On the other hand, in Europe, there are model makers at the top of the German level, for example, the largest hobby maker in the UK, Hornby with Plastic model brands, Air Fix under the umbrella will also be transferred to Phoenix Asset Management Company in Management has changed with the sale of shares, the management of Elele in France has been changed many times, now the management is continued under the new owner in , the feeling of tapering is extraordinary.

There are emerging plastic model makers in China, especially Macao, especially the transponder with mold factory in Macao has made a breakthrough brand and has grown rapidly to threaten Japanese manufacturers.

Even in the Japanese market, Kyosho who swept the market with radio controlled computers worsened management, sold all the shares to Shinsei Bank investment fund, Rembrandt HD, and plan to regenerate.

The project itself is continuing. Change in the world of miniature cars also stand out. As it used to be, mini cars are no longer being sold, and if you make a mold for production of one model, you are in a situation where it can not be sold enough for its mold cost to be amortized. For this reason, the resin model is making a difference in width, replacing the die casting model that requires a mold.

When comparing die casting and resin, you can not make a gimmick that was possible with die casting such as opening a door or opening a hood, for example with a resin. There is also a fear of deformation due to aged deterioration.

However, as it is possible to produce small quantities accordingly, many manufacturers are turning their attention to resin models at present.

Especially recently the quality of the resin has dramatically improved, and the production method is also changing due to the appearance of 3D printers.

Of course, if it says to the manufacturer, he seems to feel a big appeal to die casting, but at present it seems that there is a fear of breakage of profit and it is impossible to get out at hand.

As you know, the plastic model also needs a mold by injection molding, and it is necessary to make a number more than a certain number for its amortization, but it is difficult to clear it, and when it comes to miniature cars it raises a new mold The fact that the number of plastic models produced is decreasing.

Consumer preferences have also changed. It is certain that few children are interested in making things. Tamiya also admits the fact that consumers in the hobby industry are aging. Even if you look at the hobby show, it is remarkable that many of the end users occupy most middle-aged elderly people. Whether the hobby that makes up things will be lost as it is, I feel like I am having a real turn at this moment.

Plastic model is incredible …. Source in Japanese language : Response emerging media. Regards Admin. That was before, kits prices went up high , so were the tools and paints, it took me a year to replace my air compressor because of budget. Chinese brands like hobby boss or trumpeter became popular because of price, but many are complaining now because of the parts and the price.

Perhaps you can resurrect your old but still desirable kits with a lower price. This might attract many. Market responds to buyers accordingly.

Apart from being involved with the scale modelling industry manufacturing, marketing, sales I am a scale modelller myself. Chinese plastic model kits… even the best of their kits lack accuracy this is my subjective opinion, I am sure there are many modellers who can and will contest my statement.

Besides, Chinese guys sell their models cheap first years and after that their prices go higher than European or American or Japanese plastic kits. True, that you get more spare parts in Chinese kits. They fill up storage boxes nicely. I am far away from who bought who and who sold who in terms of manufacturing and distribution.

Where does it all go? You are the big guys of the industry you know how far and wide the imagination with added technology can run. Invest your money into 3-D printer development and production. Make these 3-D printers at the price of a TV set. Make the materials for 3-D printers at the price of pack of instant coffee.

Meanwhile carry on tackle Chinese manufacturers by overtaking them releasing very accurate kits this addressed to Tamiya and to Fujimi first and foremost. Stay ahead, stay alive. We love your plastic kits though we getting older and older and our eyesight is failing us, who loves smaller scales.

Regards, ILYA. Interesting to read that China and particular Beijing are booming. I have tried to find models for purchase in Beijing and have not succeeded yet. I am retired and I am 75 years of age. Model building has been a part of my life for years. Trumpeter is leading the hobby in the ship space. Aoshima has finally started to release new subjects finally British cruisers and carriers!

Trumpeter does have issues with their aircraft kits. Hasegawa has a bit of a reputation within the hobby for removing weapons from their aircraft kits and selling those separately.

From my own perspective while the average age of model builders is increasing there are a lot of kids entering the hobby but mainly from places like Eastern Europe and Asia. The space is definitely getting crowded in terms of options since you now also have competition from the diecast space.

Plastic model - Wikipedia

A plastic model is a plastic scale model manufactured as a kit , primarily assembled by hobbyists , and intended for static display. A plastic model kit depicts various subjects, with a majority depicting military and civilian vehicles.

A kit varies in difficulty, ranging from a "snap-together" model that assemble straight from the box, to a kit that requires special tools, paints, and cements. The most popular subjects of plastic models by far are vehicles such as aircraft , ships , automobiles , and armored vehicles such as tanks.

The majority of models depict military vehicles, [ citation needed ] due to the wider variety of form and historical context compared to civilian vehicles. Other subjects include science fiction vehicles and robots most famously from Gundam series , real spacecraft , buildings, animals, human figures, and characters from motion pictures.

While military, ship, and aircraft modelers prize accuracy above all, modelers of automobiles and science-fiction themes may attempt to duplicate an existing subject, or may depict a completely imaginary subject.

The creation of custom automobile models is related to the creation of actual custom cars and often an individual may have an interest in both, although the cost of customizing a real car is obviously enormously greater than that of customizing a model.

The first plastic models were injection molded in cellulose acetate e. Frog Penguin and Varney Trains , but currently most plastic models are injection-molded in polystyrene , and the parts are glued together, usually with a plastic solvent-based adhesive, although experienced modelers may also use epoxy , cyanoacrylate , and white glue where their particular properties would be advantageous.

While often omitted by novice modellers, specially formulated paint is sold for application to plastic models. Complex markings such as aircraft insignia or automobile body decorative details and model identification badges are typically provided with kits as screen-printed water-slide decals. One such trend has been to offer a fully detailed kit requiring normal assembly and gluing, but eliminate the often frustrating task of painting the kit by molding it out of colored plastic, or by supplying it prepainted and with decals applied.

Often these kits are identical to another kit supplied in normal white or gray plastic except for the colored plastic or the prepainting, thus eliminating the large expense of creating another set of molds.

Another trend which has become very extensive is to produce kits where the parts snap together, with no glue needed; sometimes the majority of the parts snap together with a few requiring glue.

Often there is some simplification of detail as well; for instance, automotive kits without opening hoods and no engine detail, or sometimes opaque windows with no interior detail. These are often supplied in colored plastic, although smaller details would still require painting. Decals are usually not supplied with these but sometimes vinyl stickers are provided for insignia and similar details.

Resin casting and vacuum forming are also used to produce models, or particular parts where the scale of production is not such as to support the investment required for injection molding. Plastic ship model kits typically provide thread in several sizes and colors for the rigging. Automobile kits typically contain vinyl tires, although sometimes these are molded from polystyrene as well, particularly in very inexpensive kits.

Thin metal details produced by photoetching have become popular relatively recently, both as detailing parts manufactured and sold by small businesses, and as parts of a complete kit. Detail parts of other materials are sometimes included in kits or sold separately, such as metal tubing to simulate exhaust systems, or vinyl tubing to simulate hoses or wiring. Almost all plastic models are designed in a well-established scale.

Each type of subject has one or more common scales, though they differ from one to the other. The general aim is to allow the finished model to be of a reasonable size, while maintaining consistency across models for collections. The following are the most common scales for popular subjects:. For example, the engine in the recent reissue of the AMT Ala Kart show truck is significantly smaller than the engine in the original issue. AMT employees from the s note that, at that time, all AMT kits were packaged into boxes of a standardized size, to simplify shipping; and the overriding requirement of designing any kit was that it had to fit into that precise size of box, no matter how large or small the original vehicle.

This practice was common for other genres and manufacturers of models as well. In modern times this practice has become known as fit-the-box scale.

In practice, this means that kits of the same subject in nominally identical scales may produce finished models which actually differ in size, and that hypothetically identical parts in such kits may not be easily swapped between them, even when the kits are both by the same manufacturer. The shape of the model may not entirely conform to the subject, as well; reviews of kits in modeling magazines often comment on how well the model depicts the original.

In the late s several American companies such as Hawk , Varney, Empire, Renwal and Lindberg began to produce plastic models. American model companies who had been producing assembled promotional scale models of new automobiles each year for automobile dealers found a lucrative side business selling the unassembled parts of these "promos" to hobbyists to assemble, thus finding a new revenue stream for the injection molds which were so expensive to update each year.

These early models were typically lower in detail than currently standard, with non-opening hoods and no engines, and simplified or no detail on the chassis , which attached to the body with very visible screws. Within a short time, the kit business began to overshadow the production of promos, and the level of accuracy and detail was raised to satisfy the demands of the marketplace.

Many smaller companies have also produced plastic models, both in the past and currently. Prior to the rise of plastic models, shaped wood models were offered to model builders. These wood model kits often required extensive work to create results easily obtained by the plastic models. While injection-molding is the predominant manufacturing process for plastic models, the high costs of equipment and making molds make it unsuitable for lower-yield production. Thus, models of minor and obscure subjects are often manufactured using alternative processes.

Vacuum forming is popular for aircraft models, though assembly is more difficult than for injection-molded kits. Resin-casting , popular with smaller manufacturers, particularly aftermarket firms but also producers of full kits , yields a greater degree of detail moulded in situ, but as the moulds used don't last as long, the price of such kits is considerably higher. In recent times, the latest releases from major manufacturers offer unprecedented detail that is a match for the finest resin kits, often including high-quality mixed-media photo-etched brass, turned aluminum parts.

Many modellers build dioramas as landscaped scenes built around one or more models. They are most common for military vehicles such as tanks , but airfield scenes and ships in formation are also popular. Conversions use a kit as a starting point, and modify it to be something else. For instance, kits of the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" are readily available, but the Constitution was just one of six sister ships, and an ambitious modeller will modify the kit, by sawing, filing, adding pieces, and so forth, to make a model of one of the others.

Scratch building is the creation of a model "from scratch" rather than a manufactured kit. True scratchbuilt models consist of parts made by hand and do not incorporate parts from other kits. These are rare. When parts from other kits are included, the art is technically called "Kit Bashing. Thus, it has become common for either term to be used loosely to refer to these more common hybrid models.

Kitbashing is a modelling technique where parts from multiple model kits are combined to create a novel model form.

For example, the effects crews on the various Star Trek TV shows frequently kitbashed multiple starship models to quickly create new classes of ship for use in background scenes where details would not be particularly obvious. The demographics of plastic modeling have changed in its half-century of existence, from young boys buying them as toys to older adults building them to assemble large collections.

In the United States , as well as some other countries, many modelers are former members of the military who like to recreate the actual equipment they used in service. Technological advances have made model-building more and more sophisticated, and the proliferation of expensive detailing add-ons have raised the bar for competition within modeling clubs.

As a result, a kit built "out of the box" on a weekend cannot compare with a kit built over months where a tiny add-on part such as an aircraft seat can cost more than the entire kit itself. Though plastic modeling is generally an uncontroversial hobby, it's not immune to social pressures: [ citation needed ].

Recently, the UK's Ministry of Defence has required model and decal manufacturers to pay licensing fees in order to use Royal Air Force insignia. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. In art and architecture, plastic model may also be any three-dimensional physical model , regardless of material.

In mechanical engineering, a plastic model is a mathematical model of a material which incorporates plasticity. This article does not cite any sources.
