WITH rapid advancements in communication and technology, the world is becoming ever closer. Asians: see no sex, hear no sex, speak no sex. Image: Chris Lim via Flickr. Like Tiffany Leong and other fellow Malaysians or possibly Asians, I was never comfortable discussing the s-word growing up.

I remember being a bit of a pest, always curious about everything around me and asking a million and one questions at any given time. Naturally, I heard and learnt everything about sex through friends, movies, the internet.

I was self-taught about the topic, no thanks to the education I received in school and no matter how hard the government tried to throw something in the mix to follow in the footsteps of developed countries. My Australian classmates would always talk about how sex was always on their minds or how awesome their little frisky session was with their partners last night. How was it? We were barely Cut us some slack. To her, sex was just as common a topic as what she had for lunch. One would argue that the less you know about sex, the less likely you are to make a mistake like Juno and therefore the better, but then I ask: is naivety a good thing?

Image: LyndaSanchez via Flickr. Well for one, the education most Asians receive or lack thereof is definitely a main reason. Speaking of parents, the way they influence you and how much plays a big part in what you think about sex.

Take the movie Juno for example. The high school student breaks the news of her pregnancy to her parents but instead of unleashing any verbal or physical abuse on her, they accept the shocking news openly and think of ways to support their daughter in this taxing time. Asian parents? For the most part, their first course of action would be disownment. Well, maybe not in this day and age, but endless verbal torture of how stupid their offspring are to do something so shameful would ensue.

This would be followed by weeks of fuming and a refusal to speak to their children. Considering this, how can anyone blame us Asians for avoiding premarital sex or the topic of it like the plague? When I was commissioned this discussion piece, my editor raised a very good point. If Asians are so naive and reluctant to talk about sex, why are certain Asian countries considered seedy sex holiday destinations? Thailand is not only well known for its beautiful sandy beaches but also for its infamous red light districts.

Image: Yago Veith via Flickr. Her elders would not allow her to go to school so rebelled and escaped to Bangkok. Working as a cleaner at a sex club, she made peanuts but was told she could turn her life around if she sold herself to sex tourists. Desperate to make ends meet, she gave in and began her career in the sex industry at the very tender age of Westerners often rave about the service they get from Asian sex workers and how they would return for the same services.

Where does the sexual knowledge come from if Asians are so naive? Again, the answer is, they have no choice but to absorb as much knowledge as they can from their peers and colleagues if they want to survive in the sex industry. We Asians do love it no matter how much we appear to detest it. My answer is, not really. Tagged: Discussion SEXtember. Post Your Thoughts Cancel. Get weekly updates in your email! First Name. Sexual racism - Wikipedia

Rape culture is entrenched in society at ideological, institutional, and individual levels. And they might even be something that you dismiss as harmless — or even as compliments. So below are ways that racist and sexist tropes leveraged against East Asian women intersect with rape culture. Imagined as decorative object or a toy, these tropes commodify Asian women into passive objects — made to be seen, played with, or touched, but not heard.

Their value relies only on their bodies or looks. It creates a false fantasy where exotic aesthetics get projected onto Asian women. The emphasis of these stereotypes on submission and docility imagines them as without agency and without the capacity to give consent. In the show, Joe uses Anita for sex. Written as his property and perceived as a literal object, she is given no capacity to consent to these acts. As discussed above, fetishization of Asian women perceives our bodies as objects to be conquered and discovered traces back to colonial legacies that justified rape and enslavement.

Perceiving Asian women as exotic also projects a fantasy around how Asian women behave and act, including imagining us as always wanting sex or available for sex. One in ten Asian American women report violence from an intimate partner, and these numbers increase when detailed by ethnicity and nationality.

These are just some of the names of Asian women who have been murdered by men — men who were former partners, men who felt scorned or rejected by women they felt entitled to, men who then thought murder was the appropriate response. These women were killed violently by men who took up logics of toxic masculinity. These men, with such feelings of entitlement towards women and towards sex with women, are not anomalies. Toxic masculinity is a concoction of entitlement that brings together white supremacy and rape culture — it is masculinity steeped in racism, classism, and heterosexism.

This response picks up a narrow vision of masculinity, where masculinity can only be defined and empowered by explicit heterosexuality. The myth also plays a large role in the erasure of sexual violence in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. How dare we have feelings of pain and grief? Though they may seem like a harmless infatuation with Asian women and our bodies, fetishes of Asian women link to experiences of racist, sexual violence and have negative impacts on our physical safety and mental and emotional health.

Either way, we end up being denied agency over our own bodies, consent, and safety. These fetishes and stereotypes have had further serious and violent implications as they contribute to rape culture. Need help? US Edition U. News U. HuffPost Personal Video Horoscopes.
