Sign in. Blondie, driven by gossip from her girl friends decides that Dagwood needs to push his boss for a better job and more pay. Dagwood is hesitant because he lacks confidence in his ability, but Blondie Dagwood is put in charge of the construction of a new factory when Mr Dithers is suddenly hospitalized with an ulcer.
On the first day on the job a bird's nest is found in a tree due to be chopped Mr Dithers wants to purchase a gun for his collection. He knows his wife will be extremely angry if she finds out. A dither organizes for Bumstead to purchase the weapon then give it to Mr Dithers as Watch now. In this second attempt to base a series on the long-running comic strip, Blondie is a stay-at-home mother to Cookie and Alexander.
Husband Dagwood toils in an office where his boss Mr. When Blondie has an opportunity to become a star the Bumstead household, mainly Dagwood, becomes upset. Dithers has gone on vacation and left Dagwood to look after the company.
A salesman convinces Blondie that Baby Dumpling is a budding genius, so the Bumsteads enroll him in a special school from which he disappears. Dagwood wants to join the trout club and Blondie wants a fur coat. Jealousy reigns when Dag's old girlfriend Joan shows up, but nothing else matters when a drawing at the movie theatre provides money for the coat.
Cynical writer George Wickley arrives as the Bumstead household experiences the birth of daughter Cookie. Dagwood gets in trouble with bookies and winds up in jail. Bank manager Samuel Breckinridge comes to his rescue to thank Dagwood for getting compulsive gambler Mrs. Breckinridge out of the casino just before the police raid. Dagwood accidentally enlists in the Army reserve. Blondie accompanies him to basic training camp. Dithers has a house he can't unload because it is rumored to be haunted.
When he lets the Bumsteads move into it, they discover sliding panels and secret passages. The haunting is the Rich tool manufacturer hires Dagwood for a new plant, but Blondie upsets things when she casts the rich man's daughter in a play. Arthur Lake had played Dagwood in a long series of "Blondie" movies.
This show, retelling stories and situations familiar to readers of the comic strip, lasted one year. NOTE: I had originally written most of this review on August 3, and had submitted this in the episode 6 entry which is now deleted. Dagwood is asked by his boss, Mr. Dithers Robert Burton , to buy a certain gun using Dithers' money. Miller Joseph Kearns thinking the gun is for him. It's Dag's birthday and Blondie keeps coming back to get it for him raising the price doing so.
Dagwood keeps having to do the same as well. Anyway, this was a little funny much of the time possibly due to director Abby Berlin's timing. He had previously been an assistant to director Frank Strayer on the initial series of Blondie movies before taking over after he left. When the two fell in love and got married, Dagwood was disinherited by his parents for marrying beneath his station. This forced him to go to work, and thus the premise of the strip — namely the day-to-day life and problems of a middle-class family — was born. Along the way, Blondie and Dagwood had two children: a boy and a girl.
The boy — originally nicknamed Baby Dumpling — eventually became known as Alexander. When the baby girl was born, however, a mail-in contest was held to name her. Hundreds of thousands of the comic strip's fans sent in suggestions before a name was chosen. Do you remember her name? If you don't, I'll reveal it shortly. It's still well-drawn and well-written, incorporating modern technology and fads to keep it fresh and topical. And the situations are universal enough that everyone can identify with the beloved characters.
I remember watching them on Saturday afternoons in the late s. There's several where Dagwood is working for someone other than Mr. Dithers and I remember being confused.
