In this personal story, Dee Dee Risher weaves experiences from her life with the biblical story of the prophet Elisha and the Shunammite woman.

But when disaster strikes, she does not hesitate to hold Elisha accountable or talk back. Hidden in the story, Risher believes, are the questions that lead to a more authentic life: - What does it mean to build a holy room in our lives? As we work to transform our world, how do we grapple with failure? That is our own unique, authentic gift to the world.

I know Dee Dee Risher, and have to tell you, she is an extraordinary human being, despite her insistence on her ordinariness, her humility and self-deprecating humor. I've known her now for more than half of my life. While I've read many articles and book reviews Dee Dee has written, nothing quite prepared me for how beautifully this spiritual memoir is written, and how clearly I would hear her wry humor in that South Carolina drawl in my head as I read, as though she were reading to me, as though she were thinking out loud.
This book is intimate in the best way, in that Dee Dee shares her innermost doubts and vulnerabilities, her fears, in midlife, that perhaps the life she is living will never reconcile with the life she imagined she'd live. In the book, Dee Dee circles around and around the story of the Shunamite woman, her son, and the prophet Elisha from Second Kings, poring over the details as they reveal new insights in Lectio Divina.
Not to write a spoiler, but the miracle healing is far from triumphant and complete. She finds parallels between that scriptural story and her own, of making space for the sacred despite our unknowing.
Dee Dee has a restlessness, a poet's heart, a burning desire to reach always beyond boundaries of race, class and sex, to meet others as equals. But too well we know our shared human experience forever leaves us short of that goal.
We experience failures, misunderstanding, losses, the death of hope, the death of loved ones. Too often we cannot find the balance we seek to live simply with love and respect for creation as Christ followers living in the First World, nearly buried as we are in an over abundance of material things. Dee Dee's deep generosity of spirit and compassion for those to whom such economies are necessities will not let her make easy choices.
She's too awake for that. Dee Dee skillfully weaves the story of the Shunamite woman in Scripture into a swirling contemporary meditation on work, marriage, parenting, and her midlife search for meaning in the losses, failure and fears that she, and frankly, we all, experience.
How to find and live from our truest selves? By facing these losses clear-eyed, by walking with each other, hand in hand, by looking for the shafts of light and the flashes of gratitude that in the face of certain death, we get to live this life, with these loved ones, that we can be a shelter to their dreams and hopes.
By chance I sat next to the author at a recent event to help writers create a 'brand' so they could better market their work. Little did I know Dee Dee Risher was light-years beyone those concerns. She has created a brilliant book from the heart. It's a combination spiritual autobiography, the making of an activist, how she has lived and worked in the USA and overseas among a diverse roster ofeveryday people of all races, colors, and creeds. Now she's creating a multi-family home in a treelined neighborhood of Philadelphia.
She writes like an angel and may actually be one, for all I know. The author quickly calls you into a journey of personal acceptance and growth. Although she using a bible passage as a reference, both Christian and non-Christian will be not only inspired but entertained! You will be refreshed without the heavy work of most self help books. I love this book.
I read it little by little because I don't want it used up. It speaks to my condition: "This book is for people who have lived through stuff. It is's for people who have carried big dreams but lately seem to find themselves mired in the ordinary business of living.
Many of us have loved well--or loved poorly--and lost. We've had to look death in the eye more than once. Our tongues have encountered the metallic taste of failure. When they ask what it's about, I answer simply: "It's a midlife book. Failing at things we loved and wanted to thrive but didn't. I continue, "I'm trying to make failure teach me. Only I'm not sure I can figure it out. From there I was hooked]. I think anyone would enjoy it. Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.
I really loved the authentic soulfulness of Dee Dee Risher's look at her life. It challenges me to examine the questions and doubts of my own life with a fierce and tender honesty. Disclaimer: I am a friend of the author. So I was pleased to finally sit down with her at length through this book and share reflections on Scripture, activism, aging, gratitude, and spirituality. Dee Dee's writing is beautiful. Her story has given me words to describe my path and courage to forge ahead, till I can swim fearlessly in the vast ocean of the Father's love for me.

Take the rap for a lottery winner's disappearance. Falsely admit to killing him. The woman, Dorice "DeeDee" Moore, told Smith that he would become a "legend" for taking responsibility for the crime. Moore was unaware Smith was an undercover Lake Wales police officer, and his white GMC Yukon was wired to record the entire conversation.
Wearing headphones, jurors heard the secret recording Thursday in Moore's murder trial, and she cried as it was played. Moore, 40, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Abraham Shakespeare. Testimony is expected to continue today in her trial. If convicted as charged, she faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
A confidential informant helped arrange the meeting between Moore and Smith on Jan. Wearing a purple shirt and tie with neatly trimmed facial hair, Smith, a sergeant with the police department, looked much different than he did back then.
The large-framed officer had a full beard and shoulder-length dreadlocks. Smith was posing as a drug dealer preparing to go to prison for 25 years for a conviction in a fictitious criminal case. He offered to take the fall for Shakespeare's disappearance so his son could have money while he was behind bars.
Moore started the conversation with a cheery "hello" and launched right into her conundrum. Smith agreed to be a fall guy, but said he needed to know how Shakespeare was killed and where the body was hidden to pull off the scheme. I'm going to have to sell something. Before leaving, Moore gave Smith a pleasant goodbye. Investigative reports state Moore later revealed the location of Shakespeare's body to the confidential informant who set up the meeting and handed over a.
Shakespeare's body was found Jan. He had been shot twice in the chest. He was last seen alive in April Prosecutors say Moore was Shakespeare's trusted financial adviser and preyed upon his fears of losing his dwindling fortune in a pending child support case. They say Moore took control of Shakespeare's assets and then killed him. Moore's lawyers say their client purchased Shakespeare's assets, and drug dealers who haven't been caught are responsible for his killing. Jurors heard testimony from Sentorria Butler, who had a son with Shakespeare.
Butler, 27, described a rocky relationship with numerous arguments, including over Shakespeare having sex with other women. Butler said they would reconcile quickly. Butler testified Shakespeare initially supported their child, but later began to question whether he was the father. She filed a petition for child support in court. Butler denied wanting a large trust fund for their son, and she insisted she wanted Shakespeare to provide regular assistance as he had done in the past.
However, Butler acknowledged that Shakespeare had threatened to turn all his assets to cash and then leave. Investigators didn't find financial records to show Moore paid Shakespeare for his assets. Moore told detectives that she paid Shakespeare in cash. Prosecutors say Moore took measures for months to make it appear Shakespeare was alive, such as typing a letter purportedly from Shakespeare to his mother, and instructing a person to impersonate Shakespeare in a telephone call to his mother.
Butler testified that Moore came to her one day, crying hysterically. She said Moore offered to give her a home if Butler would lie to Shakespeare's mother and claim to have recently seen Shakespeare. Butler said she reported Moore's offer to investigators. Butler said Shakespeare wasn't physically abusive to her. She said Moore generated various rumors about Shakespeare's whereabouts, including that he was receiving treatment for AIDS.
Moore began crying in court during Butler's testimony. Outside the jury's presence, Moore demanded her lawyers play a video that she said vindicates her.
Under cross examination, Butler testified Moore showed up at her home with a video recorder one day and asked her various questions.
Butler testified that she lied about those things because Moore told her to say them so Moore could post the footage online to inflame Shakespeare to come out of hiding. In other courtroom matters, jurors were told that the trial could continue next week. Originally, the trial was estimated to end today, but it could could take longer — perhaps stretching into Monday and Tuesday. Moore's lawyer, Byron Hileman, said he didn't know yet whether Moore would testify on her own behalf.
